I WANTED TO FEEL SAFE

by Anatoly IVANOV

PSYCHOLOGY / SOCIETY / ESSAYS

“I wanted to feel safe. So I went to a safe college, my parents told me it’s for my job security. I didn’t go alpine climbing. I didn’t travel to India. I never rode in a helicopter. I never sailed offshore on a sail yacht. I didn’t go skydiving or scuba diving. I never started a business. I never asked for that top-level exec position, because it was safer to stay at mid-level. I never backpacked alone in the woods. I got married to a man who made me feel safe and secure. We had safe sex in 2 positions, in a safely large bed, only after work in the evening… until we stopped any sex altogether. And then, then I was 65 and got covid-19 and realized I’d never tried acid, because it might be unsafe.”

paraphrased final thoughts before dying in the safety of a top-notch hospital.
