DEATH ON SCREEN

by Anatoly IVANOV

CINEMA / PSYCHOLOGY / SOCIETY / ESSAYS

We view death countless times on screens, daily. People exploding, shot, bleeding-out, run-over, cut to pieces in so many “creative” ways. And yet, how many of us think about the inescapable fact that at some point in the future, possibly very near future, we’ll be dying in a similar way? Gasping for air? Cringing in pain? Feeble and afraid? Mumbling prayers and regrets?

How many of us actually realise, watching yet another human blow-up in a cloud of blood and shrapnel, that at least a third of our own lives is already gone?
