PREVIEW VS REVIEW: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

by Anatoly IVANOV

JOURNALISM / PREVIEWS / REVIEWS

As you may have noticed on my web site, I publish previews and reviews. Although both speak about gear or services, they’re quite different:

PREVIEWS

REVIEWS

something I’ve seen and inspected briefly something I’ve used for at least a month
untested by me in real life intensively tested by me in real-life
specifications given by the manufacturer specifications verified by my own measurements
focus on announcement and preliminary research focus on detail and thorough research
my projection (estimation) of how well the product or service will perform my verdict of how good the product or service really is
pictures supplied by the manufacturer pictures created by me
relatively short text relatively long text

Some previews develop into reviews. Example: my Garmin Oregon preview in 2008 evolved into a Garmin Oregon vs Garmin Colorado review in 2009.

Some reviews skip the preview stage. This is generally the case of products or services already available to me, allowing me to focus on a comprehensive review sooner.
