Have you ever put on a sock inside-out? How about “lost 10 kg just by thinking about it”?
That’s how Apple’s Foundation’s Black Hole Jump Drive™ feels to someone who understands physics:
• “black hole” is a spur-of-the moment, unfortunate misnomer of John Archibald Wheeler in 1967 — it’s not a hole and not black (emits radiation), but a collapse of a lot of mass in a tiny region of space-time — so creating one in the middle of a ship would squish it, instead of moving anywhere
• there’s just not enough matter around to create an accretion disc so quickly
• the energy required to create that much mass is enormous, breaking the laws of conservation of energy
A wormhole à la Interstellar would make more sense.
