A small city of 140 000, Bern (Berne in French) is nonetheless the federal capital of Switzerland. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bern have barely changed since Middle Ages, preserving the original medieval street plan, with its arcades, street fountains and defensive towers. The river Aare almost encircles the old-town to form a steep-sided peninsula.
