Although a runner in motion generates a lot of body heat, as much as 1/3 escapes through uncovered head and hands. Moreover, skin receptors in bare hands and head send a wrong message to the brain that the whole body is cold. Runners add layers of clothing, overheat, soak in sweat and then freeze for real. For an optimal winter run, wear just 1 long-sleeved base layer and a windshirt on the torso, and complete by a hat and gloves.
