The combined power of moving images and sound can do more than distract from the daily business of life. Beyond dreaming up an entertaining story, a film can focus our attention on what’s around us, ask questions, form new opinions and remain in memory. That’s what my films try to achieve.
Even the non-specialists, the regular viewers realize that they are often watching the same movies, again and again. It seems like only the titles change, sometimes just by a number.
That’s why I like to embrace the fears of the box office and to experiment with the norms. To take risks. To sincerely state our originality, while remaining true to good taste and eternal values of beauty, clarity, quality and humor. In other words, to start an intriguing, perplexing dialogue instead of a predictable, comforting monologue. Every moviegoer appreciates a bit of surprise, trust and respect.
Let’s shoot that gorgeous short or feature that no one has ever shot. Contact me with the details about your project.
Cinema is the pinnacle of my artistic endeavor, a point where all of my previous 22 years of photography, 18 years of writing and 20 years of design join together, to form the ultimate expression and transmission of beauty and curiosity in life.
It’s my still photography, but in motion. It’s my writing, but transcending into the visual. A lifelong passion for music. Decades of tinkering and product design. A knack for building and realizing the impossible. The utmost physical effort to move in space and time with the camera, made possible only after a lifetime of running, cycling, climbing and backpacking. And of course, the pleasure and thrill of working with others on a bigger scale.
I favor the fast and light approach to filmmaking, which often translates to much lower budgets. I mostly work on location and prefer available light. Forget the gensets and trailers! Versatility and latest technology are key. I shoot digital instead of film, use wikis and iPads instead of paper scripts and shot lists. Most on my team can work several jobs, me included: I write, direct, shoot and edit. Which results in smaller, cozier teams where everyone knows what to do without a call-sheet.
